101-Handling Images-Process

Process for adding a set of images to bitweaver:

  1. First copy all the raw images to the camera archive. Since there a number of sources, devices like the S24 phone and the Sony Camera each have their own archives, and material from on-line sources is handled in a similar way.
  2. Select all the related images and duplicated in a new directory. For example images from a show whould be grouped in a new directory in the /home/media/Pictures/Shows/ folder with a title of the show name ending in the year.
  3. Browse the folder using Gwenview and where there are duplicate images ( I normally take a couple of pictures of each target ) select the ones that can be deleted.
  4. Once down to a tidy set of images, they can be renamed and in the absence of any more accurate title, using the show name and year followed by a number is the quick solution. This is done via Dolphin which when selecting a list of images to rename adds a numeric index after the new file name. If there are groups of similar types of images it may be useful to break things down further such as all the miniature traction engines become title-Mxx for example.
  5. At this point, actually tidying the cropping of images is worth the exercise and Gwenview's tools allow this to be done as well as fine tuning any additional grouping with the -X type tag.
  6. Once happy with the set of images exif_update.sh script takes an image directory and having adjusted the .JPG to .jpg then replaces the 'SONY DSC' description with the new file name which fisheye will then reflect into bitweaver.
  7. At this point the quick method of uploading to bitweaver is by zipping the whole folder into one file which will then create a new gallery with the same name in the fisheye image storage package. So in the case of a new show gallery one navigates to 'Shows' and uploads the zip at that level resulting in a new gallery with all the image titles as the file names.
  8. It is worth just checking the resulting gallery just in case any images did get missed. the image_order tool is useful here as it gives a list of the images, allows ajustments to names and the order the images are displayed as well as being able to select a static image that is displayed in the gallery list. If a static image is not selected, random ones are used at the gallery level.
